Green-card renewal? There’s an app for that.

July 28, 2017 by Lynn Olinger

Sample I-551 from USCIS websiteThe good news:  Need to replace a lost, damaged or expired permanent resident card (“green card”)?  It can now be done on a mobile phone.  The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has an app which can be downloaded after creating an online account at https://myaccount.uscis.dhs.gov

But be careful:  Replacing a green card, like any other USCIS application, comes with possible risks.  USCIS will once again check all your background information – U.S. departures and arrivals; criminal history; false U.S. citizenship claims; unlawful voting; answers on previous applications.  For many people it is prudent to consult with an immigration lawyer to determine if you’ve committed any immigration violations, especially since the green-card’s issuance, that can put your permanent resident status at risk.
